Generac Generator Troubleshooting Guide
Is your Generac generator not operating properly?
Not sure what the indicator light means?
Use this guide to help identify what may be happening before calling for service.
Green Light – Ready to Run
A solid green light means your generator is in Ready to Run mode and operating properly.
If the green light is flashing, your generator is currently running and should be powering your home during an outage.
If the generator is running but your home is not receiving power, contact our office for assistance.
Yellow Light – Service Reminder
A yellow light typically indicates that routine maintenance is due, such as an oil change or scheduled service.
There is usually no immediate cause for concern.
If you recently had service performed, the system may simply need to be reset.
Red Light – System Alert
A red light indicates a fault or shutdown. In many cases, the issue can be resolved with a reset.
Before calling for service, please attempt to reset the generator steps provided.
Step 1: Reset the Generator
- Unlock and lift the generator lid.
- On the controller, press OFF.
- Press ENTER.
Step 2: Test the Generator
- Press MANUAL to start the generator.
- Let it run for approximately 4 minutes.
- Press OFF to shut it down.
- Press AUTO.
If the screen displays “Ready to Run” with a green light, your generator is good to go.
If the Red Light Returns
The screen will display an error code.
- Write down the code exactly as shown.
- Keep your generator keys with you.
- Call our office with the code ready.
Our office staff is trained to interpret these codes. In many cases, we can help troubleshoot over the phone. If a technician visit is required, having the code allows us to bring the correct parts and minimize service time.
Please note: Your warranty requires that you be able to access the generator to retrieve codes and attempt basic resets. If this cannot be done, a service charge may apply.
